Two shot dead in Mooiplaas informal settlement tavern shooting

15 August 2022

The tavern was shut down after it was found to be operating without a valid liquor licence.

Two men were shot and killed during a tavern shooting at the Mooiplaas informal settlement on Saturday evening.

One victim was declared dead on the scene and the other was transported to the hospital with gunshot wounds.

Erasmia police spokesperson Sergeant Tumisang Moloto said the second victim was declared dead at the hospital.

“It is alleged that a group of unknown suspects opened fire and shot the victims before fleeing the scene on foot,” said Moloto.

He said the motive of the shooting is currently unknown and the circumstances surrounding the shooting will be investigated.

The tavern owner was arrested on the same night and charged with the Contravention of Liquor Act.

Moloto said the tavern was found to be operating without a valid licence.

He said the police confiscated alcohol with an estimated value of R30 000.

“We are experiencing challenges at informal settlements because unlicensed taverns are being built at a rapid rate,” he said.

“We will, therefore, investigate how long the tavern had been operating.”

The Erasmia SAPS station commander Phindile Madonsela urged community members or anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects to come forward,

Madonsela said the provided information will be treated with strict confidentiality.
