The four will appear in the Pretoria magistrates court in 48 hours.
Four suspects were arrested in Centurion during a routine Lyttelton police patrol for possession of a suspected unlicensed firearm.
Local police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller said the police, on their routine, spotted a suspicious VW Polo with three occupants.
“The police were performing a routine patrol when they spotted a white VW Polo with three men inside, a fourth man then got out of a silver BMW to join the three.”
The police immediately suspected that something was not right and made a U-turn to investigate further,” Miller said.
The police found two firearms – a 9mm pistol and a .38 special revolver – as well as 9mm, .38 special and 45mm bullets in the car.
“The vehicle that the suspects were driving in has been identified as an e-hailing vehicle,” he said.
“The four men will be charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property, as well as reckless and negligent driving.
“They will appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court within 48 hours. Our detective services will be working around the clock to establish what the suspects were doing, and will be looking to add further charges at a later stage,” Miller added.
Lyttelton police station commander Brigadier Matlala thanked the police who apprehended the four suspects.
“Police are are committed to root out crime in the area,” he said.
“Criminals should know that Centurion is no playground for criminals.
“Criminals are not welcome in Centurion, and our community must not tolerate any form of lawlessness in our area,” Matlala concluded.
