The JMPD’s internal affairs unit received a complaint on Friday evening from a member of the South African police service, who claimed that two members of the Metropolitan Police kidnapped her friend and drove him around Mayfair. The motorist was arrested because he apparently drove with a forged foreign driver’s license. The suspects apparently demanded R4 000 for his release.

“The unit followed up on the complaint and traced the service vehicle of the members involved. They were then able to establish that the two members of the metropolitan police, both men, had already released the victim, after taking R4 000 from him,” says a statement by the City of Johannesburg.

“The … law enforcement officers were able to determine that they had in fact broken the law. Their company car was searched and R14000 in cash, as well as 300 foreign and two South African driving licenses were found in it.”

The complainant positively identified the two members as his kidnappers and video footage also shows the interaction between the members and the victim. The JMPD members were consequently arrested and charged with kidnapping, fraud and extortion
