SOCIAL SERVICES

Social Services is about giving professional support to individuals, families and communities with the aim of restoring the independence and full functionality of the individual, family or community (whatever the case may be).

  • Workers are guided by the following social work methods: case work, group work and community development. This section works closely with ECD Section and Community Development Section. The section is responsible for development of policies, strategies, norms and standards as well as implementation plans. The section is also responsible for crisis management and social emergency relief.
  • Social Services is also responsible for the Social Emergency Programme which aims at alleviating the pressures of disaster from affected families and communities. This is done through the Tshwane Food Bank.

EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT (ECD)

ECD is about programmes and initiatives for children 0 -14 years old. The section provides social welfare services for children. The section also focuses on youth development programmes and initiatives, as a continuation from ECD programme. The section is responsible for development of policies, strategies, norms and standards as well as implementation plans.

Drug and Substance Abuse

The section’s primary role is to fight against drugs and substance abuse through prevention, treatment and rehabilitation at community and facility-based level through key strategies embedded in the following:

  • Demand reduction
  • Supply reduction
  • Harm reduction

Programmes include:

  • Support to not-for-profit organisations (NPOs) who run drug and substance abuse programmes
  • Hopeline helpdesk: a 24-hour service that takes calls from community members who need help with or information on substance abuse. 0800 467 347 (0800 HOPE GP)
