A Pretoria businessman has been gunned down under mysterious circumstances outside the city.

The man’s half naked body was found sprawled next to his company car in an open veld alongside the Old Muldersdrift Road early on Monday morning.

It is believed that the man, who cannot be named until his next of kin have been informed of the death, was killed sometime over the weekend, according to police.

The man, who worked for a technical servicing company, was shot once in the chest near Hills and Dales.

Police said a wallet and car keys belonging to the man, identified through his firearm licence, were found in his car. Police on the scene said the man may have been a client of a prostitute and shot and killed during a botched robbery.

Police spokesperson Inspector Paul Ramaloko confirmed that the man had been shot once in the chest. The motive for the killing was still unknown, be said.

The man, whose pants were down around his ankles, was in his mid-40s. “At this stage we do not know the circumstances that led to the killing and we appeal to anyone who has information on the murder to contact the police,” he said.

He declined to comment on allegations that the man may have been a client of a prostitute and that he may have been killed during a botched robbery. Ramaloko said no arrests had yet to be made.
