Diepsloot suspect remanded in custody for possession of an unlicensed firearm, September 16, 2022
In the early hours of August 27, police on patrol duties near HeronBridge College spotted an overturned vehicle along the road. Police spokesperson Captain Tinyiko Mathebula said the officers investigated closer to find out what happened, and it was then that a man appeared and claimed to be the owner of the vehicle. “One officer allegedly spotted a firearm on the man’s waist. He was then asked to produce a licence for possessing a firearm and failed to do so.
35-year-old man sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment for business robbery and other crimes, September 16, 2022
Randburg Magistrates’ Court sentenced 35-year-old Phuthi Tjelele to 15 years of imprisonment for business robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and attempted murder.
Diepsloot Police Station spokesperson Tinyiko Mathebula said Tjelele was arrested in March 2017.
“On the evening of 29 March 2017, Tjelele and his accomplices robbed a shop in Diepsloot Ext 2 and fled in a white VW Polo. Before fleeing, they fired two shots and a stray bullet hit a bystander in the leg.” Mathebula said police responded swiftly to the incident and started looking for the robbers’ vehicle.
“A vehicle matching the description given by eyewitnesses was spotted driving along the N14 highway. After pulling over the vehicle, two suspects managed to flee on foot leaving the [accused] behind. A search was conducted and a firearm was found in possession of the [accused].”
Police sergeant released on R3 000 bail, July 17, 2022
A police sergeant was released on R3 000 bail after appearing in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on June 22.
Thulani Monageng (43) allegedly shot at his girlfriend from inside the house in Ext 5 after she attempted to break the door open, according to spokesperson for Diepsloot Police Station, Captain Tinyiko Mathebula. A police sergeant was released on R3 000 bail after appearing in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on June 22.
Suspect arrested for possession of illegal firearm in Diepsloot, August 17, 2022
A 36-year-old man was arrested in Ext 3 for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Crime Prevention Unit members were patrolling when they allegedly heard a gunshot and immediately headed in the direction of where the sound came from.
According to the spokesperson for Diepsloot Police Station Captain Tinyiko Mathebula, while the officers were still trying to ascertain where the gunshot came from, they saw a group of men standing on the street. The officers searched the men and the suspect was found in possession of a firearm. When asked to present a licence for the gun he failed to do so.
