Security cluster in Erasmia, come together to raise Road Safety Awareness

The increase in robberies alongside the R511 has prompted the security cluster in Erasmia, Centurion, to embark on a road safety awareness campaign.

Erasmia police, Tshwane metro police and security company, SDS, conducted the awareness campaign aimed at engaging motorists and the general public about road safety and also advising them to be more vigilant on the road.

Police spokesperson Tumisang Moloto said in the past month police witnessed a significant rise in robbery cases on the R511.

“We encourage members of the public and motorists to avoid picking up hitchhikers as this might put them at higher risk of becoming victims of crime,” Moloto added.

Recently, metro police received numerous complaints about criminals masquerading as metro police officers in an unmarked vehicle along this road.

Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the criminals were stopping drivers, robbing or hijacking them.

“These incidents are occurring mostly on the R511 between Diepsloot and Hartbeespoort as well as in Centurion.

“The metro police are working very hard to apprehend these culprits. Currently, the SAPS are investigating three similar cases, and the metro police will cooperate and work jointly with the SAPS to get to the bottom of this crime,” Mahamba said.

In February, the police conducted a similar campaign which focused not only on crime but issues such as GBV, children’s rights, hijacking, and robberies.

Moloto told Rekord at the time that it was important for the community and police to work together in tackling the societal issues that were ravaging the community.
