Hijacking and Kidnapping

FOLLOW THESE BASIC PROTOCOLS

Do not respond to Facebook or other social media adverts selling goods in unsafe or unknown areas.

When stopped by any person(s) appearing to represent SAPS or Metro Police, activate your cellular phone tracking and alert a family member or CPF or private security member before stopping. Your whereabouts can then be traced. Practice this procedure with your family members. Start today!

Hide your cellular phone under your seat or an inaccessible part of the vehicle. It is the first item attempted robbers will seek to retrieve.

If you are concerned about your safety drive to the closest SAPS police station following the Blue Light Protocol.

Ensure location tracking is enabled on your cellular phone and that a trusted person has access to your online tracking facility (Google or proprietary). Do this now!

If financially possible, install trackers in your vehicle to allow tracking companies to trace your vehicle.

If hijacked or kidnapped, do whatever is necessary to remain alive. Do not offer any resistance when pointed with a firearm or held captive.

Media Statement from the office of the Station Commander Colonel Maqhawe Simon Dhladhla

2024-02-26

Attempted murder, kidnapping, and Armed Robbery

It is alleged that on  Saturday, 24th February, 2024, the victim reacted to an advert on Facebook marketplace to buy a Bobcat Caterpillar.

They were provided with a pin drop. On their arrival, the complainant phoned the seller, and he was told to wait there someone will come and fetch them.

Later on, plus-minus 10 suspects arrived at the scene and pointed victims with firearms and demanded the cash. The victims replied that they did not have cash with them. The complainant was arguing with one of the suspects and was shot in the head.

Both victims were taken into the bush where they were searched and their property taken. They were robbed of their cellphones, and suspects took their bank cards and demanded the pin codes.

The victims were kept hostage for plus-minus 6 hours.

Suspects took the witness to their vehicle and instructed him to take the person who was shot to the hospital.

The witness could not find the hospital in the area and decided to drive to Bronkhorstspruit hospital.

The victim was released from the hospital on Sunday, 2024-02-25.

Colonel Dhladhla would like to warn community members to refrain from looking for bargains on social media platforms more especially in areas of Loate and Winterveld as they might end up being victims of crime. Those who shop online ought to exercise caution and limit their purchases to reliable websites or apps.

The groups who specialize in these frauds entice social media users to make purchases via Facebook’s Marketplace, an e-commerce platform where products and services are offered for sale.
