Guidelines
If you encounter road spikes, the priority is safety: reduce speed (around 40km/h), continue driving to a safe location, and immediately contact emergency services and share your location. Avoid stopping on bridges or in poorly lit areas. If you or your passengers are injured, assess the severity and provide basic first aid until help arrives.
Here’s a more detailed breakdown of guidelines for road spiking:
- Prevention and Awareness:
Be Vigilant:
Remain aware of your surroundings and be cautious, especially in areas known for spiking incidents.
Avoid Objects on the Road:
Don’t stop or drive over any objects on the road, as they may conceal spikes or other hazards.
Safe Following Distance:
Maintain a safe following distance to allow for maneuverability in case of obstacles.
Lane Changes:
Change lanes just before passing under bridges, as they are often dark and hotspots for spiking.
Straddle Two Lanes:
If safe, travel straddling two lanes to minimize the risk of hitting spikes in one lane.
Emergency Lanes:
If you spot an obstacle, move into the emergency lane or onto the grass if the highway allows. - During a Spike Incident:
Reduce Speed: Reduce your speed to approximately 40 km/h.
Don’t Stop: Continue driving to the nearest safe location, such as a police station, garage, or well-lit area.
Avoid Bridges: Do not stop near bridges as they can be dark and dangerous.
Emergency Services: Immediately contact the police and emergency services.
Inform Loved Ones: Inform your loved ones and share your location with them.
Stay in the Vehicle: Do not attempt to leave your vehicle to assess damage or check the tire.
First Aid: If injuries occur, assess their severity and provide basic first aid. - Post-Incident:
Report to Police: Report the incident to the police and local WhatsApp channels
Replace Tires: Tyres cannot be repaired and must be replaced. - Additional Tips:
Don’t “Floor It“: Avoid accelerating rapidly after hitting a spike.
Be Alert: Maintain a calm and collected demeanor while driving, especially in potentially dangerous areas.
Use Phone: Ensure your phone is fully charged and have a plan for contacting emergency services or loved ones.
